05.20.2014 Whatcom County Voter General Election Database: The Precincts....

Per Precinct Registrants(Blue) and Votes (Red) for the 2013 General Election.
Under Construction 9:23 PM 6/07/2014. Technical  piece for this blog is hereBelow the break I have  assorted graphs to assist the viewer in examining the registration and turnout for the 2013 General Election by precinct. The charts below explicate five years of general election in Whatcom County for voters registered as of May 20,2014This means that we are looking at election turnout numbers only for those people currently registered to vote as of May 20th, 2014. In the next piece, I will look at the 2600 plus voters who have registered or re-registered since the start of 2014 . As of 06.05.2014, the voter database for Whatcom County stood a126418 registered voters.

The precincts are numbered sequentially in most of these graphs from 1 to 177. However, actual precinct IDs for Whatcom County map as below. The 100 series maps mostly North to South throughout the county. The 200 series is generally reserved for Bellingham.  The 300 - 800 series are reserved for the small cities in Whatcom County (Blaine, Everson, Ferndale, Lynden, Sumas). A  detailed high resolution precinct map of Whatcom County can be found here. You can look up your voting precinct at MyVote WA. Precinct IDs and number change over time with population growth and electoral reorganization. Once again, the list below is compromised of voters active 05.20.2014 who  were registered as of the 2013 general election.

This first graph below gives us a snapshot of the registered voters for the 2013 election still active today. As you can see, the precincts are irregularly populated with registrants:

The next graph show us those voters active today who voted during the  2013 General Election. Note the Y axis scale. This a much smaller subset of all total registered voters:

The overlay below put those voters active today who voted in the 2013 General Election in Red. Those voters still registered today who did not vote in the 2013 General Election are underlain  in blue.

Here is a line graph that takes the voters from the two groups described in the last graph and divides them to get a turnout %; still looking backward from the perspective of those voters active as of May 20th, 2014.

The next two charts below look at the same data (Registrants, Voters) in first two charts, but use a 'qplot' (from ggplot2 in R) that shows us population density along the X axis.  This is an unconventional look at density that may require some perceptual adjustment. Read your own precinct horizontally across the X axis. The darker blue and red lines generally represent  more urban precincts.

Here's another ggplot2 look at the 100, 200, and 300 - 800 series precinct. Red lines represent smoothed and otherwise registrants, blue votes, yellow smoothed turnout percentage. Click to Enlarge this one. It is worth a look.

A similar chart that divides the 177 precincts equally into 5 groups is below.

The last charts are 'lattice' or trellis graphics.  They are looking at the "poor performers" for Turnout %, Registration, Total Votes in 2013 General . I have constructed two sets of "poor performers":

[Precinct Set A]
  • Less 35 percent turnout
  • Less than 350 registrants
  • Less than 350 Votes in the 2013 General Election
[Precinct Set B]
  • Less 50 percent turnout
  • Less than 500 registrants
  • Less than 500 Votes in the 2013 General Election
These graphs are sorted by sequential precinct numbering (not PrecinctIDs) alphabetically but not numerically. Along the X axis of each chart is a number that combines  the voters represented for the specific chart. Click to enlarge the graphs
